Natural Solutions Delivering Lasting Results
Babbage delivered the rehabilitation of approximately 220 m of stream and the adjoining Lake Hakanoa, redesigning an earlier concept that had been deemed unbuildable.
Working with Waikato District Council, Watercare, Waikato Regional Council and local landowners, the project improved ecological health, stabilised erosion and enhanced public amenity.
The Challenge
The original design relied on extensive hard engineering and was estimated to cost three to four times more than the available budget. The project also faced restricted site access, winter construction constraints, and a requirement to be designed, consented and constructed within a single financial year.
Our Solution
Babbage provided investigation, design, consenting, procurement and construction support services. The design replaced hard-engineered solutions with a naturalised approach incorporating native planting, boulders, woody debris and habitat enhancement measures to improve stream stability and ecological outcomes.
Results
The revised design reduced construction costs to approximately one-third of the original estimate while delivering a practical and buildable solution.
