Mangawhai Road Construction – Reactive Remediation Project
Kaipara District Council engaged Babbage as the Client’s Agent for an urgent roadworks project. Our services included project management, contract administration, construction supervision, and technical input.
After the 2023 Auckland Anniversary flooding, a slip affected Mangawhai Road's eastern side. To ensure safety, the road was converted to one lane with 24/7 traffic lights. The Northern Transport Alliance (NTA) couldn't complete the slip remediation before the holiday season due to a high volume of flood recovery work and conflicting priorities.
Kaipara District Council hired a local contractor to build a 170m temporary road section, restoring two-way traffic before the 2023 holiday season. The work included clearing vegetation, relocating services, bulk earthworks, realigning drains, geogrid reinforcement, road pavement construction, and installing safety measures. As the Client’s Agents, we managed the project, oversaw contracts, supervised construction, liaised with stakeholders, and provided technical input on geogrid and pavement design. The urgent project was completed in 3 weeks with concurrent design and construction.
